Bachelor of Counselling

BACKGROUND

The Bachelor of Counseling program aims to produce trained and competent counselors. This programme offers a comprehensive coverage of knowledge in counseling with strict emphasis on producing highly trained professional counselors. The comprehensive curriculum was developed to suit the demands for counsellors and helping professionals based on established curriculum requirements and standards. Students who enrol in this program are expected to follow the curriculum as stipulated by the programme. The curriculum requires students to fulfill a total of 25 credit hours of of University Core Courses, 78 credit hours of Programme Core Courses, 18 credit hours of Elective Courses and 15 credit hours of practicum, internship and academic exercise.

The University Core Courses are compulsory courses mandated by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. They cover basic yet essential knowledge base such as nationhood studies, civilizational studies, language, writing and co-curricular activities.

The Programme Core Courses consist of compulsory courses which incorporate all the basic skills considered crucial for students to learn and master. The areas covered by these courses include basic counseling practice in various settings, counseling techniques and skills, psychological courses, theories in counseling and psychology, current and specific issues in counseling and related services, research methods, academic exercise and field practicum. This program also offers a host of elective courses for students to choose from. Each elective course is tailored to specific practice areas relevant to counseling services and the helping profession in general. They offer in-depth coverage of practice, applied knowledge, skills development and other issues considered relevant and essential to the profession.

BACHELOR OF COUNSELLING COURSE STRUCTURE

To be conferred the degree of Bachelor of Counselling with Honours [B. Couns. (Hons.)], a student is required to enrol and pass a minimum of 136 credit hours which cover five (5) components, namely University Core Courses, Programme Core Courses,Programme Electives, Free Electives and Practicum, Internship and Academic Exercise. Students are also required to achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 for every semester in order to avoid conditional pass. The programme structure is as follows:
